Social Studies Activity: Seneca Falls Convention
Time: 1 class period (40 minutes)
Objective:
- Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Women’s rights movement by
analyze the Declaration of Sentiments and make inferences using the graphic organizer it says,
I say, and so.

(1) The suffrage movement (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony); Seneca Falls
Materials:
- Copy of the Declaration of Sentiments
- Copy of the Graphic Organizer It says, I say, and so
Description of the Activity:
- Teacher will provide background information on the Declaration of Sentiments
- Who wrote it
- Where it was written
- When it was written
- What document is similar to the Declaration of Sentiments
- 10 minutes
- Teacher will then handout a copy of the Declaration of Sentiments to each student and the
graphic organizer it says, I say, and so.
- Students will be familiar with using the graphic organizer.
- Students will break into groups of 2-3 and work together to fill in the graphic organizer.
- 25 minutes
- Homework - Choose 5 of the 15 grievances and in the Declaration of Sentiments and re-write
them for a 21st century audience.
Assessment of student learning:
- Students will be assessed based on the completion of the graphic organizer it says, I say, and so.
- Students will also be assessed on the completion of the homework rewriting the grievances in
the Declaration of Sentiments.

- This lesson will enhance student learning students will understand the struggles that women went through in order to gain the right to vote. By reading the Declaration of Sentiments students will understand the sentiments used. Students will use prior knowledge and information in the document to determine the ways women used to gain the right to vote.
