Social Studies Activity: Iron Jawed Angles film
Time: 3 class periods (40 minutes each)
Objective:
- Students will be able to understand the struggles that women went through during the suffrage movement by complete the daily movie guide.
- Students will watch the film Iron Jawed Angles.
- The film follows political activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns as they use peaceful and effective
strategies, tactics, and dialogues to revolutionize the American feminist movement to grant
women the right to vote.

(1) The suffrage movement (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony); Seneca Falls
Materials:
- The film Iron Jawed Angles
- A blank movie guide
- A character chart
Description of the Activity:
- The teacher will begin by passing out and explaining the blank movie guide. (5 minutes)
- The teacher will then showing a short clip on the women’s suffrage movement. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFOieRHRzh8)
- Students will practice filling out the guide while watching the clip.
- After the clip has finished the teacher will model their findings. (5 minutes)
- The teacher will introduce the movie to the students by presenting and discussing the character
chart with them. (5 minutes)
- Students will begin watching the film Iron Jawed Angles
- 25 minutes the first day
- 40 minutes the next two days
Assessment of student learning:
1. Students will complete a daily movie guide.
2. Students will write down their opinions, thoughts, and reactions
3. Make connections to their own lives
4. Write down any questions that they have
5. Answer any questions that I have
6. Students will use their movie chart to aid in the completion of the movie guide
Enhancement of Literacy Awareness and Student Learning
1. This lesson will enhance student literacy awareness by watching the film Iron Jawed Angles. Students will complete a movie guide while watching the film. While watching the film students will make connections, ask questions, share their reactions/opinions and answer questions that the teacher has.
2. This lesson will enhance student learning by showing students the hardships that women went through to gain the right to vote. Students will be able to see different types of protest that women used in attempt to gain the right to vote. Students will also learn about prominent historical women that fought for the right to vote.
